Southies, by Vaine.Vade

The South in general is an excellent place one can gain experience with little fear of being player-killed. If you die in the south, it is usually from a deathtrap, or from a mob. In general, the breakdown of the “Southies”, (As I affectionately call them, and own) is thus:

And a few more areas in which I have no experience.

The following is a listing of the zones with a difficulty rating (out of 10) for each rough level categorization, a listing of the mobs you can expect to meet there (and the estimated level needed to take that mob), and a complete description of the zone.

For the purposes of this guide:

  • Lowbie = Lvls 1-10
  • Midbie = Lvls 11-20
  • Highbie = Lvls 21-30
  • Highbie+ = Lvls 30+

Amador, and Surrounding Area

Amador is about as far south as you can get. Amador is home to the Children of the Light, so if you are a channeler, doing so is a no-no while you are in the vicinity. The only ways I know out of Amador are through the rock view and logger camp, which leads to Emond’s Field, or through traveling, which I don’t advise. Out of the North Gate of Amador, there are two general directions: west and east. The west direction takes you to a barn, and if you go through the fence, and the backdoor, you get into a clearing where there is plenty of deer for you to stat on, and a few bucks and stags as well. To the east is plenty of elks and elk does. Going in a generally north-east direction will eventually bring you to exits leading upwards, which, should you follow, eventually take you through the logger camp and to the end of the Old Road (South of the Wagon Bridge). Amador is a great place to experience as there is plenty of experience for all levels, and there is very little possibility of a trolloc attack.
East of the “break off point”, you can find a cave of mercenaries close to a grassy hill. This is a supermob, and you should never try to go in solo (unless you are some crazy highbie+!) with nothing less than a small army behind you (4-5 Higbies, I like to play it safe). So as long as you are careful, and watch your back, Amador is fun and games.

Here, you can expect to find:
    -Cute Brown Deer (1)
    -Raccoons (1)
    -Stags (3)
    -Bucks (3)
    -Elk (15)
    -Panthers (15)
    -Jaguars (15)
    -Gnarled, Ancient Trees (20)
    -Wolves (Never)

    Lowbie Rating: 10/10
    Midbie Rating: 9/10
    Highbie Rating: 5/10
    Highbie+ Rating: 2/10

Far Madding and Surrounding Area

Far Madding and the area surrounding the town is a decent place for midbie xp. The mobs in this area is typically for levels 10-15, but there are a few stags and bucks scattered throughout, though I would hardly make the effort, if I were a lowbie. The mobs are all in this range of levels (10-15), and the area is only an area one must pass through en route to Caemlyn or Tear. There is also a cougar or two lurking about, not much to worry about except that they will go after your horse. Once again, there isn’t much to be careful about, but take care of what you know you can avert. The town of Far Madding itself is not too impressive, and there is little you can do there. There is a meat bazaar where you can sell meat for cash, but that alone does not make the town a very lively place for your adventures.

Here, you can expect to find:
    -Cute Brown Deer (1)
    -Stags (3)
    -Bucks (3)
    -Elk Doe (10)
    -Bobcats (10)
    -Jaguars (15)
    -Panthers (15)
    -Elk (15)
    -Cougar (15)

    Highbie+ Rating: 1/10

BACK

Forest North of Whitebridge

The forest north of Whitebridge is a maze that is full of xp for lvls 20-30. There is plenty of boar, jaguar, and bobcats for lower level characters, but the group that stands to profit the most is lvls 20-30. There are at least four sets of Ancient trees in this area, each which gives a lot of xp to whoever kills it first. I must warn you, however, that there is a group of four trees together that will kill just about anyone trying to hit them solo. I have seen it done with high abs and a bronze scourge, but kids, do not try this at home. This zone is from just north of the Whitebridge north gate. It connects to the Braem Wood, but trollocs seldom visit on their way down from wherever trollocs come from. The forest is great, and the mobs in this area is of enough diversity for midbies and highbies to both get much from this zone. There is even a room in this forest that loads wild stallions, which aren’t too bad.

Here, you can expect to find:
    -Angry Tree (10)
    -Forest Boar (10)
    -Creepers (10)
    -Jaguar (15)
    -Vernarsh (15)
    -Gnarled, Ancient Tree (20)

    Lowbie Rating: 1/10
    Midbie Rating: 7/10
    Highbie Rating: 7/10
    Highbie+ Rating: 3/10

BACK

Haddon Mirk

Haddon Mirk is a twisted forest north of Tear, way down south in the world of Wotmud. The forest contains many strange things, and the forest itself is a great place for all levels Highbie and up to xp. In addition, Haddon Mirk leads to the Spine of the World, another great place for highbie xp. Be sure not to kill any of the wolves in Haddon Mirk, besides the Rabid Wolves, as they will result in you getting wolf-wanted. This means that you will be hunted by some of the best pkers on the mud. This is a bad idea. There are a few fogs in Mirk that you cannot hit without a warded weapon. Make sure you have one before you enter Mirk. To the east of Mirk is the Spine of the world. There is a pass that leads up, and ends up becoming the Southern spine of the world. In the Mirk area there are Mountain dwellers, scorpions, lizards, and other things that lurk in caves and hit hard when you go inside. Be careful when xping in Mirk, and you will get your xp fast. The Deranged Wolfbrother super mob is in Mirk, and he is very difficult to kill. Get a small army with you before you hit, preferably 7-8 highbies. The Cave Dwellers chief is easy. The cave dwellers are found in the crater of a mountain cave. You need search to find the entrance, and once you go inside, you will have to fight through a string of cave dwellers to get to the chief’s (who is a woman) room, where there is a group of cave dwellers in charge of her safety. She is not so hard to beat, and only a group of 4-5 is needed. She loads basic dodge and a jeweled dagger. There are also a few groups of trees, just for you.

Here you can expect to find:
    -Creepers (10)
    -Spiders (15)
    -Vernarsh (15)
    -Mist (15)
    -Elk (15)
    -Huge Mountain Lions (20)
    -Rabid Wolf (20)
    -Rabid Bear (25)
    -Gnarled, Ancient Tree (20)

Hillmen of the Emond’s Field Area

On the Old Road, south of Emond’s Field, there is a bridge. If you go under this bridge, west, and behind the waterfall, then you will emerge into Hillmen country. There is also a smuggler cave in the area, but that is covered separately. There are one of two grizzly bears leading up to the hillmen area, and the zone itself is full of hillmen and hillmen chiefs. From the Ancient bridge, you can go up to a courtyard, which is the home of the hillmen. The hillmen all load mirrored lanterns, basic dodge, and fourteen copper each. The Hillman chief loads a nice club, the mattock, if you are a club user. Sometimes there are two chiefs in the same room, so be careful while walking around. The hillmen are all agro, and may go after your horses, so be careful about that as well.

Here, you can expect to find:
    -Grizzly Bears (20)
    -Hillmen (15)
    -Hillman Chief (20)

BACK

Hillmen of the Whitebridge Area

The Hillmen of the Whitebridge area are a good source of mirrored lanterns. East of Whitebridge, somewhere in the forest, there is a bridge leading to the Hillmen cave which is guarded by a Half-Trolloc. Passing him, and going into the cave, there is a split in the cave. The east side takes you to the hillmen, and the west side takes you to the snake lair. Be careful, because there is a cliff somewhere in this area, and falling off will cause your death, unless you are holding a “rope”. This area is good for some money, and some other equipment, but I don’t see people hitting hillmen for the experience value. Keep in mind that just about everything in this zone is aggressive, so you will want to look after your horses while you are here.
The hillmen load basic dodge, and so if you are a dodging character who has recently lost all his or her equip, hillmen is a place to get started. Like the Southern cousins, they all load mirrored lanterns and fourteen copper (which all adds up, believe it or not). The chief loads a morning star, which hits all who attack him, so be careful. The snake lair is basically a room at the end of a tunnel where there are three snakes who all attack at once. They are not too hard to kill.

Here, you can expect to find:
    -Hillmen (15)
    -Hillman Chief (25)
    -Half-Troll (25)
    -Snakes (20)

    Lowbie Rating: 0/10

BACK

Hills of Kintara

The Hills of Kintara are directly south of the great city of Caemlyn. From the South Gate of Caemlyn, a few south will bring you to the hills of Kintara. The road through Kintara ends at a split in the hills, one leading west, and one leading east. The exit leading to the west leads to a lot of cute deer (when they haven’t been cleared out), and the exit leading to the east eventually turns southward, toward Far Madding. If you find yourself in a cave full of wretches, you should go in a general south east direction until you arrive at a dead end, which appears to have only one exit leading back to the room you came from. Type “open creepers” and you are good to go. There is also a bear cave, which needs a little practice in search to find, somewhere to the east of the junction. I will not delve deeper into the details, as my good friend Nevelo has probably addressed any further concerns.
The Hills of Kintara are an excellent place to stat your newbie. At level 1, the cute brown deer and the raccoons are an excellent source of xp. Until you hit level 3, cute deer and raccoons are all you should attack while you are alone. At level three, with decent armor, a decent weapon, and decent skill in that weapon, you can try your hand at a few stags, bucks, and bees, which are about the same level. Stags and bucks do not assist their own kind, but bees do, so if there are two in the same room, be careful. Bobcats, coyotes, and small brown bears should not be attacked until level 10 or so. Elk should not be attacked with confidence until level 15. It has been known for a few very ambitious players to kill elk beginning at level 7, but that is with excellent equipment, something someone new to the game will not have. If you wish to try, do so, but do it at your own risk. The same goes for the wretches, which load leather equipment, which sells for a pretty good price back in town (for a newbie anyway). The wretch chief loads pretty good equipment for lowbies, although you need search to get to him, levels as well.

Here, you can expect to find:
    -Cute Brown Deer (1)
    -Raccoons (1)
    -Stags (3)
    -Bucks (3)
    -Bees (3)

BACK

Lugard Treedoor

The Lugard Treedoor is a small forest south of Four Kings which is basically right in between Lugard and Four Kings. To the south lies the entrance to the Lugard Tower, and Lugard. Not much to say about this zone, besides the fact that there is a treedoor east of the Path at the End of the Lugard Road, which contains bobcats, a boar, and a few cute deer. This is a great place to grab xp on the way to somewhere else.

Here, you can expect to find:
    -Cute Brown Deer (1)
    -Stags (3)
    -Bucks (3)
    -Hawks (8)
    -Elk Doe (10)
    -Bobcats (10)
    -Forest Boars (10)
    -Elk (15)

BACK

Lugard Sone Tower

On the Lugard road, just north of the city of Lugard itself, there is a stone tower just west of the main road. In this tower, there are undead servants, a skeleton, which loads pretty basic abs, and a few spiders, which are under the trapdoor at the entrance, and need search to be found. This tower isn’t a very big zone, but the experience in the form of spiders is great. The undead servants are not really that great, but the skeleton is great for an abs user in need. The spiders are usually in pairs or trios, so be careful when attacking them. This is about all I have to say about the Lugard Stone Tower.

Here, you can expect to find:
    -Undead Servant (10)
    -Spiders (15)
    -Skeleton (20)

BACK

Mines of the Misty Mountains

South of Emond’s Field, in the area directly north of the Main Street of Devon’s Ride, there is a forest. A few north, a few west, a few north, a few back east, and one north will take you deep into the Westwood. There is a door called the “bark” you must open in order to get down into the mines. Dismount and lead your horses inside, and then go down. This leads to a series of tunnels beneath the misty mountains. To the south and east, there is a passage that leads down, to the mines of the misty mountains. In this passage are mine guards, who attack anyone who trespasses. They are not too hard to dispose of, and load some pretty good basic abs for those in need. There is a further series of tunnels throughout the area, that leads to two sets of Mine Overlords, which are a sort of mini-supermob. They are usually in a room with a few mine guards, although two well-equipped highbie warriors can take them. This area is good for getting cash, as the overlords load seven crowns each. But for xp, this zone is basically worthless.

Here, you can expect to find:
    -Mine Guards (15)
    -Mine Overlords (30)
    -Miners (innocent)

    Lowbie Rating: 0/10
    Midbie Rating: 4/10
    Highbie Rating: 7/10
    Highbie+ Rating: 5/10

BACK

Plains of Altara

Of the two plains east and west of Lugard, the west plains (Altara) are the easier to do. The plains are full of lions, bears, and other cats, and there is even a pair of trees in it. The zone is great for experience for lvls 20-30, and plains east and west of Lugard have been my two favorite xp zones for three years. In addition, cutting through the Altara plains, past the old bridge, and into the forest takes you to Emond’s Field, which is much better than going all the way around to Baerlon.

Here, you can expect to find:
    -Hogs (8)
    -Bobcats (10)
    -Coyotes (10)
    -Cougars (15)
    -Lions (16)
    -Bears (16)
    -Grizzly Bears (20)
    -Mountain Lions (20)

BACK

Plains of Maredo

The plains of Maredo are east of Lugard, over a bridge outside of the East Gate. This zone is full of xp that is slightly higher-lvl than the plains of Altara, and cutting through can take you to the Tear road. Should you have to run from Lugard to Tear without taking the Lugard Road, (Which fades sometimes hit), cut across the Maredo plains. The pride, a large group of lions that wander in some of the easternmost rooms of this zone, is deadly and it tracks you should you be attacked. So if you are attacked by the pride, run. There is plenty of experience here, as well as a super mob, Aylia, who is in a cave in the far east of the plains. Great zone.

Here, you can expect to find:
    -Bears (16)
    -Lions (16)
    -Elk (15)
    -Cougars (15)
    -Elk does (10)
    -Black Bears (20)

BACK

Smugglers of Roland

This is not a complete zone, as it is very small, but it is hit fairly often, so a knowledge of the area is useful. Roland is a smuggler chief who has a base close to Four Kings, which is almost directly west of Caemlyn. The entrance to his base (which is under a hill), begins at a forest trail that branches off from the main Caemlyn road. Smuggler guards, who are mainly warriors who take hits and swing at your head with heavy poleaxes, guard Roland’s cave. There is also a rogue or two (thief-like mobs who stab) lurking around in the cave. There is a deathtrap, which I fondly call “The Waterfall” as I have lost two complete sets of abs there. The smugglers are fairly easy, and should not give a group of midbies much trouble, as long as they know what they are doing. If you are a midbie, though be careful if you are going solo, as these smuggler guards are usually in duos or trios.
Roland himself is in a room that is blocked by a locked door. To get to Roland, you need a thief who can pick locks, or the key to The Chief’s Study. There is a trio of guards outside his room, and Roland is very hard to hit solo, unless you are a high-lvl thief who stabs. Roland loads a cutlass, a few crowns, a curved shield, and some other basic equipment. Unless you are the aforementioned, do not try Roland solo. I don’t see this area being hit as a source of experience. Rather, people after basic equipment will pop a few guards.

Here, you can expect to find:
-Smuggler Guards (15) usually in pairs or trios.
    -Rogues (15)
    -Roland (30+)

Lowbie Rating: 0/10 (You will die)
Midbie Rating: 2/10 (Death is likely)
Highbie Rating: 3/10 (Too little experience for the trouble)
Highbie+ Rating: 4/10 (Hit Roland for money. Everything else basically useless)

BACK

Smugglers’ Cave in the Crackling Canyon

In the crackling canyon north of the Emond’s Field hillmen (and a few down too), you can expect to find smugglers and smuggler chiefs. This area is pretty good for basic abs, and some money, as the smuggler chiefs here all load a few gold. However, they are pretty hard, and their chains hit any who enter the room. If you have good bash, use it.

Here, you can expect to find:
    -Smuggler guards (15)
    -Smuggler Chiefs (25)

Southern Spine of the World

East of Haddon Mirk, there is a passage that leads up, to the spine of the world. Here, there is plenty of xp for high level characters, with caves that have scorpions, lizards, etc. inside. If you go far enough north, you will run into Aiel, which I do not recommend unless you have a group with you. In this area, there is a tall thief who loads a jeweled dagger.

Here, you can expect to find:
    -Elk (15)
    -Mountain Lion (20)
    -Scorpions (30)
    -Lizards (25)
    -Aiel (30)

BACK

Yandar

After entering the bark north of Devon’s Ride and entering the tunnels below, instead of going to the mines to the southeast you should strike in a westwardly course, where the tunnel leads west and down. (Generally). The tunnel ends with two insects, and you can go up to the bear cave. There is an opening to the west, which will take you to Yandar. Yandar is full of ogier and Trees, and although the trees are great for xp, do not kill the ogier. They are innocent and if you wand to be clanned. Don’t kill them. I have never counted how many pairs of trees are in yandar, but it is a significant amount. Have fun. There is a deathtrap in the south east region of yandar, after climbing a rope ladder up to a tree, so be careful.

Here, you can expect to find:
    -Elk (15)
    -Elk doe (10)
    -Mountain Lion (20)
    -Gnarled, Ancient Trees (20)
    -Ogier (innocent)
